"Owen Fitzgerald's Peace Corps Experience in Mali"

December 4-18, 2011
Reception: Dec. 4, 2-4pm
PHOTO EXHIBIT at the

4 Municipal Plaza, Monroe Township, NJ 08831
The Peace Corps was created 50 years ago by President John F. Kennedy. He famously appealed to the nation: "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for the country." He appointed Sargent Shriver to set up a national service organization to provide technical assistance to developing nations.
Since 1961, over 200,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in 76 countries around the world.
[New Jersey has one of the highest rates of participating volunteers.]
Volunteers learned the local languages and customs, and lived and worked amongst the communities they served. Areas of involvement include Education, Health , Agriculture, Business, Communication Technology, Environment, Youth and Community Development.
Peace Corps Volunteers build bridges of friendship abroad, and promote cross-cultural understanding. Upon returning home Peace Corps Volunteers "bring the world back home" by sharing their experiences and insights with friends, family, and community. As Sargent Shriver so eloquently put it "Peace requires the simple but powerful recognition that what we have in common as human beings is more important than what divides us."
This exhibit by Monroe resident Owen Fitzgerald, is sponsored in part by the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of New Jersey, the Fitzgerald Family, and Former Peace Corps Volunteer and Curator, Nancie Gunkelman.
